Pocket Watches Are For Keeps

As opposed to wristwatches, pocket watches are meant to be placed on coat or trousers pockets. They are often attached by a chain to a belt loop, a lapel, or a waistcoat. Pocket watches are analog-display watches in contrast to the many modern digital displays.

An elegant pocket watch is never without its functional ornaments. The chain, also referred to as a fob, that is attached to the watch often comes in gold or silver. The hunter-type pocket watch has a hinged cover that is manually opened when checking the time. This prevents the watch face from having scratches. Pocket watches also have fasteners to secure them well.

Pocket watches have been around for a long time. The earliest mention of new pocket watches ever made was in a letter written to the Marchese di Manta from an Italian clock maker named Bartholomew Manfredi in the year 1462. The letter was a proposal to make the Marchese a pocket clock that was better than the one owned by the Duke of Modena.

Pocket watches, then still referred to as pocket clocks, appeared as spring-driven models in Italy by the end of the 1400s. The first pocket watch that can actually be pocketed was made in 1510 by a locksmith named Peter Heinlein who was from Nuremberg. That soon became very popular all over Europe.

There are two types of pocket watches. There is the open-faced that may be of the wind-up variety called a mechanical pocket watches. The other is the covered version, with a hinged front cover protecting its crystal and face. Since the pocket watchs separate second dial is normally located at six oclock, the pendant (also known as the stem of the open face pocket watch) is at twelve oclock. The hunter stem then is at three oclock. To read the open face pocket watches then, the watch is turned ninety degrees so that the stem points to the right.

Modern pocket watch manufacturers, however, as in the case of quartz movement pocket watches, dont worry about the tradition of movement orientation and the open face or hunter cases.

Despite the fact that pocket watches are not as common or popular as the modern wristwatches, theyre still deemed an upscale, decorative, and prestigious time implements that can double as a decorative wardrobe accessory as well. Pocket watches and pocket watch chains make great gifts and are usually given as retirement presents. The cover can also be engraved with loving messages making them perfect for sentimental tokens.

There are a lot of options when it comes to todays pocket watches, from the standard to chronographs, ladies pendants, and Swiss Army Pocket watches. Any of them can make a great keepsake.
